CROSSING BORDERS

On the trail of the European routes of migrants at the Austro-German  border. Trapped in the path of legal recognition and citizenship, migrants crossing the Balkan route find themselves in Fortress Europe. The denial of the right to move and circulate – a right that is still partially granted to us, born on the European side – is the denial of the very human existence, the condemnation of living in a state of depersonalization, where the only identifying element is the belonging to a mass category so well defined by the French media: “sans papier” (without documents).

DENTRO E FUORI L'ACCOGLIENZA (INSIDE AND OUTSIDE)

The past years have been marked by the refugees crisis and deaths taking place in the Mediterranean sea. Many are the migrants landing on Italian shores coming from Lybia and fleeing from war, human traffic and violence. Sardinia faces a growth of hosting centers, welcoming over a thousand people especially in the rural areas, where some holiday farms converted their activities into reception centres for refugees and asylum seekers.

LUCI A MARE (LIGHTS AT SEA)

Lights at sea is an ethnographic research and a reportage. It consists in a hounded black and white analogueue photographs taken with a 50mm lens, and limiting as much as possible the use of flash. A stylistic choice that was made to highlight the narrow space in the boat and to illuminate night shots only with the light coming from the fishing lamps, in a vision as close al possible to the perceived look. The reportage was exhibited at the MAN Museum of Contemporary Art in Nuoro in year 2014, during a retrospective exhibition dedicated to Robert Capa.

CAMPO ROM (ROMA CAMP)

A photo reportage taken in a Roma camp the day preceding the eviction. A small Roma community, since the arrival of the founders coinciding with the was in Tito’s ex-Yugoslavia, have been marginalized because Gypsies. “Zingaro” is a racist word, like “negro”, “vu cumprà”, “barbarian”. In our everyday language we sometimes use it in expressions like: “a gypsy house”, to say that it is untidy; “Being like a gypsy”, that is, dressed badly and dirty; “I’ll take you away from the gypsies”, to say that they are bad (like the Black Man). Through the local press, the association became aware that the Roma camp of Fertilia, in Alghero, would be evacuated shortly after several municipal resolutions.

LA CAMPAGNA, L'UOMO, L'ANIMALE (THE COUNTRYSIDE, THE SHEEPER, THE ANIMALS)

A visual experiment aimed at describing the countryside: the men who live it, the sheepfold, the rural families living at the edge of urbanization. The main subjects are the men who work in the agropastoral companies, both traditional and modern, preserving their own style, know-how and culture coming from ancient times.
